Granit Xhaka has signed a contract extension
Granit Xhaka has signed a contract extension with Arsenal with an option to extend for a further year. Despite being liked with a future away from Arsenal earlier this summer, Granit Xhaka has agreed on a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2025. The midfielder was a key target for Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma, but talks between the two clubs broke down weeks ago.
Granit Xhaka joined Arsenal from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016, captained the Gunners in the Premier League opener at Brentford on Friday night in the absence of Pierre-Emerick Auabameyang.
Speaking just before the season kick-off, Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta underlined the Swiss’ importance to the club, confirming he would not be sold.
“Granit [Xhaka] is going to stay with us. He is a key member of our squad,” Arteta confirmed. This was despite the Italian club offering €12m+€3m add ons for the 28-year-old.
Meanwhile, Arteta will be looking at strengthening his midfield, with their sight firmly on Marting Odegaard. The youngster was on loan at the Emirates last season, and the Gunners are confident they can sign him once again.
